Today was supposed to be the big day to decorate the house and get the Christmas tree, but I forgot one small detail: Today was the 111th Civil War battle between the Ducks and the Beavers. The entire state shuts down for several hours. We went to the Kearney's; he is the wrestling coach for UO, and we had a great time. The Beavers whooped up on the Ducks (at Autzen--Duck territory) for the first time since the 90's. Of course Taylor had to call Dean and rub it in.

Anyway, the above picture is the "Advent Wall" where the kids are pulling out an activity to do each day of the month; I am really looking forward to this. I'm sure they'll think it's totally hokey, but then think it was all really fun when it's all over with...At least they won't be able to say they didn't do anything for their Christmas break! Taylor returns from school on the 7th, so he'll be in on it, too. I am going to make a small scrapbook of the events of each day, so we can look back on the progression of the month...I think it'll be a fun little momento. (Those things on the wall are little paper cones that I folded out of Christmas papers,[I found the directions on the web, they are the cones they fold to serve "chips" in England] then put a little round label on each with the numbers 1 through 24; I spent not one red cent on the entire project...the theme of Christmas this year is "squeezing blood from a turnip")

  2. I love your theme!! Amazing what one can do with imagination and creativity. In this consumerist society, it's nice to NOT buy and have something beautiful anyway.

  3. Hi, thanks for your kind words about my little boy's fears. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this battle.

Looking forward to seeing other "cheap" ideas you have to celebrate Christmas.
